Damaged objects

During the nightly backup one object could not be backed up because it was damaged. It is not a system object like a journal or such. It's an file we created.
I've been told there are ways to repair damaged objects. Is there any truth to this?

It depends on what the damage is. I would suggest putting the system into restricted state and running RCLSTG
