  • AS/400 temperature warning

    Hi all,

Over the past weekend, the a/c in the computer room went out and the temperature got to 102!

At one point, the AS/400 sent the following message to QSYSOPR:

Message . . . . : *Attention* Contact your hardware service provider now.
Cause . . . . . : An error occurred due to an environmental condition such
as temperature, power source, user error or other problem.
Recovery . . . : Contact your hardware service provider and provide the
following list of possible failing items:
    AMBTEMP

I have high severity messages sent to my Blackberry, and was alerted to the problem Sunday afternoon.

My question for the group is: Does anyone know what the temperature needs to get up to for this message to be sent?

Also, can I change this value? Since I live an hour away, I need an earlier warning.

I think the value is somewhere between 92-102 because the a/c went out again last night and the temp this morning was 92, but I did not get the message, but I did get the message over the weekend and the temp was 102 when I got here.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hey CesnaDriver:

    Found this:

Says 95f is the trip point. Didn't see anything that allows for change but I will continue to look

      Wow, thanks, you da man!!!!

We keep the room at 72. If I could set this value down to 87 or so, that would give us a lot more time to get someone here to address the problem.

The a/c company just left and they are also looking for some kind of alarm to warn us... but I am not sure how it would work or what the cost will be.

The AS/400 seems to be a perfect solution since I already get important QSYSOPR messages on my Blackberry.

        Re: AS/400 temperature warning

        Hey CessnaDriver:

We had a simular problem last year when the building owners decided to install an automated heating/ac system. Basicly it shut down between 6PM and 6AM and on the weekends.

We ended up adding an option to our security monitoring system which in turn called the company president. (don't know the cost)

FWIW we house the network stuff in the same room as the Iseries. It was the network stuff that shut down Not the Iseries

Fortunately nothing shut down on us, but I think it was getting close. I never saw a room get up to 102 before. That's pretty hot for indoors!

            Re: AS/400 temperature warning

I've got a client that went out and bought two fancy new rack enclosures to house the System i and all their other WIntel servers as well. The new racks have lockable doors and individual cooling units on top.

So now, when the power in the room goes down, the cooling units start pumping out HOT AIR! Plus, since they keep wanting to add more WIntel servers (to do things like run Exchange for email, and to have multiple Blackberry and data servers), they've begun to regularly overload the circuits for that room. So their brand-spankin' new i5-520 shuts itself down about twice a week these days!

I keep telling them to put the cooling units on a UPS. But my pleas go unheeded.

              Wow, littlepd, that sounds crazy!

The a/c just went out again an hour ago! Wow! Needless to say, my CFO is all over me now to come up with an automated alarm.

If I can figure out how to lower the threshold of the AS/400, it would solve all of my problems since critical QSYSOPR messages come to my Blackberry. 95 isn't going to cut it, it could be too late if it gets that warm. I need to set it to about 80-82.

Snap - we had the AC go out, and it got up over 100 in the room and all the Sun, Unix, HP etc boxes started falling over and crashing. We got onsite and the iSeries was trucking along, and we were fine

Now we have a brand new AC setup on UPS with all sorts of whistles !!!

While I agree it would be nice to lower warning the correct answer is :

                  1. Tell him to get the A/C fixed correctly! The computer is a victim, not a cause.

                  2. Why are YOU responsibile for A/C issues ? Shouldn't that be the facility manager's problem? They tend to need pushback on this kind of stuff.

                  3. They room tempature alarms for this kind of thing.

I agree, but, we are a medium sized, family owned company, and the first level managers such as myself generally shoulder a little more responsibility than the typical job would.

I am pushing back and having the facilities guy be more responsible for this, but I wanted to utilize the AS/400's capability as a second level umbrella. Currently we only have 1 facilities guy and he has to take care of 2 warehouses, 3 plants, and the owner's lake house and horse farm!

If I can figure out how to change the value on the AS/400, then I will modify my QSYSOPR paging program to send HIM the text message if there's an ambient temperature problem.

I have the perfect solution ...

Tell the owner to move the AS/400 to the Lake House. You'll be glad to work from there!!

Sounds like my old job. And I bet I know where his priorites are (1. Lake house, 2. farm, 3. everything else, etc)

The Maint guy? Yep, that is exactly right! LOL

I forgot, he does work on the CFO's house too, so that fits in somewhere between 2 and 3!
