  • Transfering a spool file to local desktop.

    Hi,

I was FTP'ing so much stuff from here to there, I was like there is nothing I can not FTP now from/to AS/400.

Here I am stuck with a printer file (spool file), and have no clue how to transfer it to my desktop so that I can attach it to my mail...

    Issues:
    a) Spool file have a special char $ in name
    b) I can see other spool files that share the same name when I do WRKSPLF.
    c) I can't find them in QUSRSYS whereas when I do 8 on any of the spool files, they say in attributes that they are in QUSRSYS library....

I am able to do DSPSPLF using job name, user name and job number which is equivalent to 5 on WRKSPLF.

    Please advise,Thanks in advance!
    Proto.

a spooled file is not the same as a file. you could copy the spooled file to a flat file and FTP that down...or if you have MMAIL (or simliar) there will be a command to email the spooled file, if you don't have that you can use Navigator to drag & drop the spooled file to your PC.

or just use iSeries Ops Nav (aka Client Access) to open the spool files and save them straight to the desktop manually... in TXT or PDF format

(here is some screen shots of doing a similar kind of thing with spool files)

Hi, good day sir, is it possible that spool files be downloaded thru a service program to either text/pdf format to a separate window-based file server? its been suggested here (in our office) that instead of running the report program again in AS/400, users will just be linked to the same report saved in the file server. thanks.

Yes - either write a simple little program to monitor an output queue and convert to PDF and copy to network location.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a utility that does something like this, as part of MMAIL (a wonderful free set of PDF/EMAIL commands) http://www.easy400.net/mmailh/othutils.htm#07

Re: Transfering a spool file to local desktop.

You can also use the shell command "catsplf" and put the result in a text file on a windows server or a PC in QNTC.
              Ex :
              Code:
              catsplf -j 131091/QPGMR/QPADEV0001 QPRINT 000002 > /QNTC/MYPC/ShareDirectory/myspool.txt

Download the RSE plugin from softlanding. You can view and save your spool files with that.

If you have Client Access installed, there is a command wrksplf.exe you can use to display spool files in a "PC" format. I think its under C:\program Files\IBM\Client Access\ by default.
