  • Import private key

I have created a public/private key pair and am using it successfully to send files to an SFTP server. Now I want to import the private key into PuTTY, so I can manage the files which have been sent to the server. When I use puttygen to import, I get a message "unrecognized key type". What am I doing wrong?

Putty uses a different file format for its keys than OpenSSH does. The puttygen program that comes with Putty can be used to convert them.

I have been following the steps in the section titled Use Existing Public and Private Keys. It is on step 2 that I receive the message that the key is an unrecognized type.

You clicked Conversions / Import Key?

        This works for me.

I update PuTTY to the latest version. Now it works.
