  • BRMS media - expiring tapes

    Hello all,

I have our tapes registered in BRMS. When our system does a back up on the tape, the tape is marked by BRMS as permanent. If I want to use the tape again, I have to go into WRKMEDBRM and them mark the tape as expired with an option '7'.

The problem for me is that if I forget and try the use the tape again, the system won't do the save because the tape isn't expired.

I am leaving for heart surgery in June and I want the tapes to be reusable without having to go into BRMS and expiring them. Is there a way to make the tapes expire automatically, or never be permanent?

    Thanks

Thanks Jamie. Sorry I have been AWOL so much this spring. My co-IT guy and I have been trying hard to keep up, and then I found out about the surgery and have been trying to wrap some projects up.

I had rheumatic fever when I was a kid that damaged my heart valve. I had it replaced with a mechanical valve when I was 14. The valve is 23 years old now and is starting to leak again, so they are going to replace it once again. I should be fine but will be out for all of June to recover.

I am trying to automate some of my morning tasks here so my substitute won't have to call me.

Sheesh, well with the avatar photo you have I can understand the heart being dodgy

BRMS - You can set up media policies which have configurable expiry dates, then in your backups just use the mediapolicy required, and whammo run the BRMS maintenenace daily to expire tapes and it will automatically expire them.

WRKPCYBRM *MED will show you the current policies, you should have these ones by default. Just add new ones to suit.
        Code:
ARCHIVAL Entry created by BRM configuration
FULL Entry created by BRM configuration
INCR Entry created by BRM configuration
SAVF Entry created by BRM configuration
SAVSYS Entry created by BRM configuration
SYSTEM Entry created by BRM configuration
Then you can sub backups SAVLIBBRM LIB(LIB) DEV(*MEDCLS) MEDPCY(CESSNA) etc, or by changing the backup control group to use the new media policy (CESSNA etc)
WRKCTLGBRM then option8 to change the control group settings as below,
        Code:
        Media policy for:
          Full backups . . . . . . . . . . . . . CESSNA Name, F4 for list
          Incremental backups . . . . . . . . . CESSNA Name, F4 for list
        Backup devices . . . . . . . . . . . . . *MEDCLS Name, F4 for list
        And voila ...
Then schedule a job with WRKJOBSCDE to run the command STRMNTBRM RUNCLNUP(*NO) RTVVOLSTAT(*NO) CHGJRN(*NO) PRTVSNRPT(*NO) PRTBKUACT(*NO) which will expire media, print the recovery and expired media reports.

        I don't know much RPG/SQL but I know a bit of BRMS

Mail/PM me if you have any questions CessnaDude ...

WOW!!!! Thank you so much GC!!! What a detailed response! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate that. I am excited and I am going to get to work on this now.

The heart valve problem was caused by rheumatic fever when I was a kid. I was just unlucky and caught it from someone at school when I was 6 yrs old. It damaged the heart valve and ultimately it was replaced when I was 14. I've had it for 23 years and knew that this day would probably come. In a way, I guess I am lucky to be redoing it when I am 39 instead of when I am much older since my age and health will be me a much better chance at success.

The avatar is from my hobby. I am a private pilot and fly 1-2 times a month for fun. The FAA has given me a hard time about the valve over the years and they will be thrilled when I get the new, modern valve.

Well good luck on the upcoming valve grind then CessnaDude, I reckon the CAA would give you less grief if you let your passengers ride inside the Cessna.

I have had a sideways shot at BRMS for prob over 10 yrs now, we run 3rd party ATL hardware so have to use 3P interface software for BRMS to talk to the tape drives etc. Believe me this has caused many issues in the past and still ongoing now.

I would like to work with an IBM ATL setup just to see how differently it runs ...

So how did it go ?

I hope the operation went well/is going well CessnaDriver.

I hear that these mechanical valves need to be well lubricated to function properly, may I suggest that you sit down in the balmy Texas afternoons and have a couple of quiet Millers each day while someone tends the BBQ.

FaStOnE's close to Texas - I nominate him to make sure CD's got enough "medicine" in the fridge to see June out.

Thanks! I survived and I am back. I was only in the hospital for 5 days. Apparently it's pretty easy when you are "only 39"...

I feel great, probably better than I have the past few years.

Re: BRMS media - expiring tapes

OK.. was this just a "dusting and cleaning"? Or, was this a valve replacement or bypass? What happened?

                    Inquiring minds want to know...

Actually it was a valve replacement AND an aortic conduit. They were suprised to find out that the old valve created an aneuryzm on the aortic root, right where it comes off the heart. So in addition to replacing the valve, the surgeon removed 3cm of my aorta and replaced it with plastic tubing! And he did all of that in just 4 hours!!!

Hell, on a bad day, I can't even write a simple subfile maintenance program in 4 hours!!!

My outlook is great, I shouldn't have to have surgery anymore, and I won't have any restrictions after I am done healing.
