  • Where are Iseries passwords stored?

I'm having trouble finding the actual text that states this, but I believe that Iseries passwords are encrypted and NOT stored in the same table that contains the rest of the user profile information. And I also believe that at one time the password and the profile information did exist in the same table, but no more.

Can someone help me verify whether this is true or not?

You cannot retreive a profile password. You can only verify it.

The password has never existed in a table.

And what table did you find the profiles in? You can retrieve the profile data using a API, (google that API) or using thr rtvusrprf command to return some data.

    Good Luck

If the passwords aren't stored in a table then where are they stored?

i'm not 100% sure but i think they are stored inside the user profile itself.

its probably in some sort of object that is hard coded for in the os that is always checked to make sure you aren't trying to access any object of that type. It will never show up in any lists because it isn't a "valid" type... this is just one guys theory

Re: Where are Iseries passwords stored?

That's one thing I miss from the S/36 -- the ability to see user passwords. When users have a problem, it's often easier for me to sign on as "them" and figure out what's wrong. Recently I had a problem but when I stepped through in debug as QSECOFR, it ran fine. The problem was an authority issue. Obviously QSECOFR/*ALLOBJ didn't blow up. I just ask the user for the password -- I'm the entire IT department so I've never had a problem where they don't want to give it to me.

You can always just set their password to whatever you want, and then when they call you because they disabled themselves by typing in their password wrong 3 times you can just tell them that they will have to create a new one.... and then tell them they should make it something easy to remember this time

I sure hope the SOX and PCI compliance folks aren't reading this. Otherwise, there's going to be some really tough questions asked....

SOX? I wear them everyday. SOX really stinks after a while.

I called IBM and asked. They said the password is encrypted and not stored in the same table as the user profile information. They said that it is not even stored in what would be known as a table. They wouldn't tell me where it was because the support techie didn't know.
