  • Advanced Job Scheduler Documentation

As I have poked around on other forums, I see that many are finding it difficult to find documentation for the IBM Advanced Job Scheduler for i5/OS (AJS). So I thought I would post some information that should help you find more documentation.

First let's start with the manual which I realize is several releases old but is still relevant in many cases for the 5250 portion of AJS. To access the manual use the following link:
    http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/cgi-bi...L500/CCONTENTS

    AJS FAQs are very helpful.

Basically, new features that were added to the product after the release of the above mentioned manual was incorporated into the infocenter. If you want more information you can look in the V5R4 or V6R1 infocenter using the following path.
Systems management -> Work management -> Managing work -> Managing job scheduling -> Advanced Job Scheduler

And don't forget the online help text within the 5250 or Navigator plug-in.

I have written several articles about some of the major features found in the product:

November 2008 - Batch Job Dependencies with Advanced Job Scheduler

September 2008 - How to Use Advanced Job Scheduler Enhancements
April 2008- New CL Features in Advanced Job Scheduler
December 2007- Seven Time-Saving Tips for AJS
December 2007- A Dynamic Duo for Automating LPAR Backups
June 2007- AJS Features Outmatch Base Scheduler
December 2006- Passing Parameters in Scheduled Jobs
September 2006- In the Know with Manual Automation
June 2006- Multiple Scheduling Environments Create a Buzz
August 2005- Report Distribution Using AJS and iSeries Navigator

IBM's Website has helpful information too:
    http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/i/software/jscheduler/

And if you still can't find what you're looking for, you can ask me and hopefully I will be able to help.

AJS_Guru, aka Brian, do you know of any books detailing AJS? The online and PDF documentation is lacking.

I believe there is a redbook with information on AJS, but it is probably lacking too.

I would suggest, to read some of my articles and look at the FAQ's to get started. Play with the product a little then shoot me a few questions.

        Hi AJS_Guru,

I had someone end the AJS monitoring hard over the weekend. (Thankfully this was on a test system.) It has not been restarted yet. There are several jobs that AJS still thinks is running even though they have ended. Is there any way to get AJS to see that these are not running anymore without turning on the monitoring?

        Thanks,
        Vilena

          Vilena,
You should be able to use Option 6 from WRKJOBJS to reset the jobs that show as in *PROCESS unless they are *TEMP jobs then you should be able to just delete them with option 4.

I believe you can hold then release the job. I don't think this would work if the job is actually running.

                  HI AJS_Guru,

Are there any gotchas I need to look out for regarding AJS and the time change coming up? I have a job scheduled to run at 1 AM that I do not want to run a second time. Is AJS smart enough to know not to run the 1 AM job again when time changes from 2AM to 1AM?

                  Thanks,
                  Vilena

                    Hi Vilena,
No, there are no gotchas. Your job will only run once that night.
                    Take care,
                    Brian

                      Hi Brian,

With the spring time change coming up I just wanted to confirm that there is nothing special that needs to be in regards to AJS. I have AJS set to not run missed jobs. Will I need to reschedule or manually run the jobs that are normally scheduled between 2 and 3 AM or will AJS take care of it?

                      Thanks,
                      Vilena

                        Hi Vilena,

Thanks for the question. There is nothing you will need to do in regards with AJS. It will not try to submit jobs twice.

                        Take care,
                        Brian
