  • Odd behaviour on document display

We have several green screen apps from which one can select an IFS document (generally .pdf) to display. With most users (ca.99%) this works fine, but in a few cases, it just doesn't display anything. Even on my work PC, it worked for a few years, then over time and after several other software packages were installed, it no longer displays. Even running the command from a DOS window does not open the document. Double-clicking the document, using a mapped drive, on the PC does open the document suggesting that file association is correct.

Using this as an excuse, a few months ago I got a new PC, and all the same software was installed... as well as the display from the green screen apps.

Has anyone had a similar experience or have any idea what could be wrong (registry, corrupt foofie valve, etc.) on those particular PC's?
    Regards

Maybe the few users it doesn't work for are using a different version of windows and the call is not allowed to be made remotely due to permissions? Are you now on Windows 7? Are any of the users this works for on Windows 7?

I agree with looking at the OS's of the failing machines. There were some parts of CA that would work (unsupported) under Vista and Win7, and parts that wouldnt. If you are running those OS'es, you need to make sure you have the ptf that allows CA to work under Win 7.

All PC's are standardized to XP. The only difference is that users may have 1 or 2 extra software apps installed. But if I take my own workplace PC, there is no difference in installed software between my old and my new. The only thing here is that on my old PC, I did play with "net use" a bit and had problem with it. I do believe it was around that time (2 years ago) that this problem occurred on my PC. I could be wrong about the timing because I'm old and the gray matter doesn't function as well any more.

The other users are mainly non-IT staff and this problem only occurs on 4 pc's (out of many).

Have you tried to just reinstall the iSeries Navigator and Emulator software? Maybe something is funky there.

It doesn't display the document from a DOS window.

Re: Odd behaviour on document display

Is the file type PDF properly associated on the system? Are you getting a good connection to the system? Are the user permissions set properly?

Re: Odd behaviour on document display

Double-clicking on the file in IFS (using a mapped drive) opens the application... so I'd say yes, the associations and permissions are correct. Remember, this also affected my user profile - before I got the new PC. Unluckily (or luckily depending on your viewpoint), I am not in the PC side, so I am not allowed to fiddle - which would most likely end up that the person can't open any program.

Re: Odd behaviour on document display

Well, if a new PC fixed it for you, then maybe those users that are having issues just need new PC's

Well, I don't know... really. This is quite odd. Have they rebooted? I jest, I jest

Unless they are missing some windows update or something I would maybe suggest reloading their PC's and seeing if that clears it up.
