  • looking to lock out websites

Anyone using any software to look down websites on PC that arent attached to the domain?

Basically Im looking to lock outside sales drones from accessing
their web based email accounts on their company supplied laptops....

I am working on a PC with 245 different viruses/trojans.....
(not tracking cookies honest to God Viruses........ )
Was told a link was clicked on Hotmail account then Chinese flashed
cross the screen and outlook opened and emails started to be sent
out..... I first told him to call a priest

    thanks

Well sometimes its easier to replace the employee with a new model that has an upgraded common sense chip. Are his sales numbers hurting lately? Might be time for a review

            Jamie,

One thing to consider before opening this can of worms. You need to realize that if you put this on and start blacklisting sites these guys will find ways around it and start using services that you haven't yet thought of. It will become a maintenance nightmare and a constant battle. So you block hotmail, gmail, yahoo mail, and a few other obvious ones. But then the sales guy can go to any number of places on the web and get infected. Next thing you know they are looking at pr0n and getting virtual std's.

It could really amount to a lot of work unless you force their internet connections to go through your proxy servers and try to control things from there. From the proxy you can set it up so that only intranet sites get resolved and all other's are rejected. But if they have legitimate reasons for web use outside the company then this gets really dicey.

Just some fat to chew on.

And one other thing.... you can set up Norton so that they CAN'T disable it. You could tighten down the security of the laptop itself, even take away the ability to install new programs. That might help solve some of it. Of course, if you were running Linux this would be a mute issue. But I won't open that can of worms

Have you looked at something like SafeBoot? This way you may also avoid someone deciding a USB connection connected to a keyfob containing a virus is stopped.

              good luck.

Re: looking to lock out websites

Havent look at safeboot yet....but there is a registry entry where I can "shut off" the usb ports:
Describes methods to prevent users from connecting to a USB storage device that is connected to a Windows XP-based, Windows Server 2003-based, or Windows 2000-based computer.

                also write protect USB
So here's a poor mans USB hack to secure your network from unscrupulous characters downloading company secrets via USB.

but not sure if I want to do that as yet.
here is a list of free junk im currenty messing with to
see if I can atleast stop some of the water from coming in.
                • Avast
                • Comodo pro free firewall
                • MBAM
                • Spywareblaster
                • mcafee siteadvisor
                • spybot
                • adaware

If I get them to all scan at once I actually
see a small puff of grayish green smoke
and if im in my office and its very quiet I
can hear the hard drive SCREAMING!

I have had very good experiences with adaware and spybot. Also try looking into HijackThis. They have a great support forum where people will help you learn how to read your HijackThis log files.

ad-aware works great so does avast. FWIW it's not a good idea to run multiple anti-virus programs at the same time...they conflict lots of times and cause some interesting issues

you can lock it down, then he'll find some site running phproxy etc, and redirect outside the safe zone again ...

gather all the sales guys into the carpark, pour petrol over the offender and light him up, the other sales guys may take the hint.
