How exactly are you trying to upload the data? I've used several different methods to accomplish that task, but it sounds almost like your trying to use the 'upload files to host' from the emulator. If that's the case it's missing the .fdf file (the description file). There's a couple ways you can fix that but I'd rather be sure that is what your trying first.

Hi, Yes....I'm trying to upload the data from excel sheet to a file in Iseries using emulator....
Also I have tried to upload by saving the excel as .CSV and creating the similar file on Iseries but no luck ..still I was displayed with the same error message 'PC file description file not specified or empty'......
If possible please list the steps in detail

Re: Uploading data from excel to AS400

why not just use the Excel add-in for the transfer? it will build the FDF for you when you transfer the data. (not to mention it's much easier than the method you are using)

If you don't have the excel add-in, these are the steps I'd take (Tomholden is right though, the add-in would be the easy way):

1 - open up data transfer from the emulator and click on the 'Create Iseries database file' button, this will open a wizard
2 - from the intro screen, click next
3 - Select the file you wish to upload by clicking on browse and navigating to the file. Once selected, click on next
4 - Select the file type from the drop down box, then click next
5 - change the name and location of the .fdf that will be created, otherwise, click next
6 - change any format options you need changed, normally, however I leave this part alone and click next
7 - Click on 'start scan' to scan the file for errors, correct any that may appear, and then click on next
8 - A list of fields will appear on this screen, check the details of each screen, then, if desired, you can change them by selecting one and clicking on the 'details' button, when everything is as you wish it, click on next
9 - Select the server you wish to upload too from the drop down list, then, click on next
10 - Name the library and file you wish to save the uploaded data as, since you are 'CREATING' a file, do NOT browse to a file and select it, this process will fail if you do. once you've named the library and file, click next
11 - Give the file a Text Descriptor if you wish, it may however, be left blank. click next
12 - Review all of the selected options and click on next to confirm, select back if you see any changes that need to be made.
          13 - Click on Finish
14 - Click on Transfer data to the iSeries
15 - when the transfer is complete a box will pop up telling you it has finished and the number of records it transfered.

Hope that helped, this was the exact series of steps I just took to upload a sample text file to my iSeries.

          Cheers,

          Andy

Re: Uploading data from excel to AS400

First you should create a physical file (MYPF01) according to the data columns in your excel file and compile that PF.
update that PF using STRDFU. (Only one record). Exit DFU and use these steps.
            In your session.,
            1) Click menu item "Actions"
            2) Receive file from Host... ( A window will appear )
            3) File-Properties
In 'General option' pannel put a tick on 'Convert CCSID 65535'
            4) iSeries pannel System name: Select your server or enter IP
            File name: YOURLIB/MYPF01

            PC
            Output device: File
            ----------------------
Click 'Details' button , select file type (Excel)
*You can select others options as you need

PC file description file "Browse" for the FDF file path and a name (MYPF01.FDF)

            Click 'OK'

            ----------------------

File name: 'Browse' for tha output file to be taken (MYPF01.XLS)

            Click 'Transfer data from iSeries'

                1) use above. create a source file / member and upload to it.
                2) ftp (search for how)
                3) place on the IFS and do a CPYFRMIMPF to a database, then copy the database to a source member.
                4) RDP

I believe the Marines dis-owned Charles Whitman after he demonstrating his sniper skills from the top of the bell tower on the Univ of Texas campus way back when. But I'm just guessing.
